Candice Soon (CandiceDoodles) is a self-taught artist and illustrator who calls many islands her homes. Born and raised in Singapore, she discovered her love of painting while living in Okinawa before moving to Oahu, Hawai’i, where she currently works as a high school teacher by day. Art will always be her first passion; through her colorful and whimsical style, she hopes to highlight the beauty and wonder of the places she’s been.
“Lei Day” is an original painting created to celebrate the aloha spirit of the Hawaiian islands. abundance. An iconic symbol of Hawaiʻi, a lei is far more than just a garland of flowers; it’s a warm embrace, a gentle kiss, a language woven with leaves and petals. This painting represents hope and community; we are forever bound together as long as we continue to connect and care for one another.
I’ve donated this piece to the wonderful people at Kiʻikau Printers to support fundraising efforts for the Hawaii Community Foundation. I’ve been at a loss for words over the past week, but it has been extremely heartwarming to see the outpouring of aloha from all around the world. No matter how small of an impact we make, I hope we can all continue to help the people of Maui in our own ways.
