KAHEKILI-NUI-AHU-MANU
By Brook Kapukuniahi Parker – www.hawaiianatart.org
Kahekilinuiahumanu was born in circa 1737 and becomes ruling chief of Maui following the death of his older brother Kamehamehanuiailuau. They were the sons of Kekaulike and Kekuiapoiwa. He also had two sisters, one of them Kalola eventually would become the wife of Kahekili’s adversary High Chief Kalaniopu’u of Hawaii Island. He is referred to by historians as intelligent, resourceful, and brave. He loved solitude, had two wives but lived in isolation from them, associating with them occasionally. Suspicious of everyone, he sometimes walked at night through the villages in secret to see if anyone was talking rebellion or negatively about him. He was also a very cunning and a brilliant strategist in the art of war. He was constantly at war with Kalaniopu’u from Hawaii Island. At times he would be very cruel and vicious in battle but then gracious and forgiving on other occasions.
