What is a Native Hawaiian plant?
A Native Hawaiian plant refers to a species that existed in Hawaiʻi before human arrival, typically arriving via natural means like wind, water, or bird dispersal. There are two categories of native plants: endemic and indigenous. Endemic plants, such as the hāpuʻu (Hawaiian tree fern) and wiliwili (Hawaiian coral tree), are exclusively found in Hawaiʻi. Conversely, indigenous plants like the palapalai (lace fern) and ʻaʻaliʻi (hopbush) are also found in other regions besides Hawaiʻi, though they were originally present in the islands.
